Commissioner Randy Leonard writes "I'm proud to introduce a new graphic for Oregon-grown biodiesel. You're going to be seeing more of this biodiesel artwork in the coming months. The graphic will identify pumps serving Oregon-grown biodiesel and vehicles powered with Oregon canola oils and reycled cooking oils.

The image represents an important community discussion about Oregon-grown biodiesel -- the synergy that happens when people throughout Oregon work together for a common goal: providing economic incentives to increase the use of Oregon-grown biodiesel to meet important sustainability goals.

Some weeks ago I drove a Water Bureau biodiesel vehicle to eastern Oregon to begin the discussion with Oregon farmers about providing fuels for metropolitan-area vehicles. That trip inspired me. I met with Ken Madison of Madison Farms in Echo, Oregon near Pendleton. A vision of the agricultural future both in terms of biofuels and farmers supporting sustainable energy sources is here. The challenge is to step up and embrace the opportunities.

Making that economic step a reality is moving forward quickly. Portland-area consumers can make significant contributions to the Oregon economy and sustainability as we start to put this identifier on participating fuel vendors’ pumps. Start looking soon for bumper stickers on vehicles powered with these fuels. The graphic underscores what we are doing – looking within our regional resources to provide sustainable biofuels generating Oregon revenues. What could be simpler?

Each step we take is important. As Commissioner-In-Charge of the Portland Water Bureau, I was proud when Portland’s water utility led the way in this work for the city. In the fall of 2007, the Portland Water Bureau converted diesel-powered fleet to B99 biodiesel. The experience of powering big rigs like back hoes and dump trucks with Oregon grown canola oil and recycled cooking oils has been outstanding. We’re moving forward with the smell of canola (and some day doughnuts) wafting over our work sites.

Bringing the work of the field to the workers of the city,

Randy Leonard Commissioner-In-Charge Portland Water Bureau
