Bridget Bayer writes "The Historic Mississippi Business Association won the Oregon Downtown Development Association (ODDA) Award in Downtown Excellence for the 2005 Special Event. Members of the Historic Mississippi Avenue Business Association received the award at a ceremony which took place in Canby, OR on Friday, May 12th.

The Mississippi Avenue Street Fair (MSF) started in 2000 as a collaborative festival with Boise Eliot Elementary annual multi-cultural festival. The Street Fair part happened in empty lots and unused parking areas that don’t exist any longer. Street Fair activities such as kids crafts and community garage sale especially drew in neighbors and families of B-E’s students. What started as a collaboration to increase involvement has grown into a major fundraiser for area schools as well as enhancing community building.

The MSF moved onto the Avenue three years ago because of demand and space requirements. The Fair now closes five blocks of Mississippi Avenue for a full day. All neighbors, both residents and businesses, participate supplying entertainment, equipment, prizes, tents and infrastructure, volunteer time, t-shirts, snacks and support. Celebrating multi-cultural community building on Mississippi Avenues offers a focal point that neighbors look forward to all year long.

This year’s Fair is on July 15, 2006, from 10:00am - 7:00pm. In addition to the same great events at last year’s fair, the MSF 2006 features a High Noon Parade’, Pet Talent Show, musical instrument crafting of drums and didjeridoo’s, making the kids activity area better than ever this year. There will be two entertainment stages this year, Musical Stage and a Dance Stage with some of the best local N/NE performers. Volunteers, vendors or interested others, contact Kirsten Holstein at Quirks & Quandaries, 3955 N. Mississippi Ave., 503-493-9716, crafts@qandq.net"
